LCC men’s tennis team off to a great start.
After recently knocking down an NCAA Division 1 opponent, members of the Laredo Community College
Palomino men’s tennis team have good reason to continue the season with their heads up.
The Palominos are hoping to score more wins as they embark on a two-day road trip beginning with a stop in
Arlington to play against NCAA Division 2 Cameron University on Friday, Feb. 11 at 9 a.m. and then off to Tyler
to confront conference foe Tyler Junior College on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 9 a.m.
The Palomino men’s tennis team is off to a great start this spring after opening the season with a strong 5-2
victory against the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners on Saturday, Jan. 29.
LCC head tennis coach Jaime Donjuan offered some valuable advice to his team before they headed to the
Alamo City .
“One of the most important things that a tennis player has to learn when playing with our team is that there is no
‘I’ in the team,” Donjuan explained. “It is all about the ‘team’ and everyone on the team has to accept that no one
is special. If they can not accept this, then it would be better for them to quit the team.”
Donjuan’s advice apparently worked as the Palomino men were able to start the match against UTSA with all
three doubles teams going the distance in some hard fought matches.
After the #2 doubles team of freshman Jair Assunção and sophomore Felipe Baptista suffered a 6-8 loss, the
duo of freshmen Bruno Kliskinic and Jeremie Castela picked up a win at #1 doubles, 9-8 (3).
It was then up to the #3 doubles of team of sophomores Antoine Raffaelli and Rafaeli Bugiga to break the tie and
clinch the doubles point to make it 9-8 (9).
“It was a great feeling to have Antoine and Rafael at the No. 3 doubles spot since both of them have big
experience from playing in the finals at nationals last spring. It came down to the wire and they ended up winning
the tie breaker,” Donjuan said.
After doubles action ended and they took a short 10-minute break, the Palominos regrouped to get focus their
attention on the singles matches.
Kliskinic, who hails from Croatia , played well at the #1 spot to win in three sets, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.
Assunção had a slow start at #2, but managed to post another win for LCC with a 7-6(7), 6-3 victory.
Raffaelli had the match under control from the start and had no trouble posting a 6-4, 6-3 win at #3.
Coutinho was the last man standing and sealed the win for the Palominos, 6-7 (7), 7-5, 1-0 (10-8) at #4.
LCC’s only losses in singles action were at the fifth spot with Baptista and the sixth spot with sophomore
Guilherme Narducci.
The Palominos have been practicing diligently in preparation for their upcoming matches, which also included a
match this week against the University of Texas Pan American in Edinburg . But due to 50-mile-per-hour winds in
the forecast for the Rio Grande Valley on Wednesday, that match has been rescheduled for Saturday, April 2 at
1 p.m.
“All I ask of my players is to give it 110 percent as a team, and if they do that, they should walk away from the
match as winners with no regrets,” Donjuan noted.
The Palominos’ match against Tyler is an add-on to their schedule.
According to the current national junior college men’s tennis Division 1 poll, LCC is ranked fourth, while Tyler is
in second.
