Buenos Dias a todos! Si a todos.

I have a tear in my Sports Wire
today. There is no TAMIU Basketball
story on our daily newspaper.   I am
now trained for one each day and
nada today. I miss you TAMIU
basketball story maybe I will see you
tomorrow I hope.

How things have changed in our
daily. Was there not a time when the
Your Spurs (mine are the Mavericks)
were always on the front page all the
time.

Well, they are now in the back page
of our daily. Is that not a shocker.

CHAMPIONS ARE CHAMPIONS. Why
have our beloved boxing champions
on the back page? They deserve to
be in the front page with the
tremendous accomplishment they
had at the "Golden Gloves
Championships".

It would have been nice to have that
story with the LEC PRO boxing
announcement for a championship
fight at the LEC.

Sorry from a baseball purist. The
Jeter story was two almost three days
old.

Ok, I get it Border Olympics baseball
is happening. Where was a bitty bitty
comment on the teams playing?

Thats Why I had to come up with a
section on the games today
CLICK
HERE TO READ THE NOTES.

Again we get the mysterious no name
article on the Boys basketball play
offs sorry "Gateway Sports". Ge get
the pollo out who writes that stuff.

Oh year have not said it in a while.
But someday we will get our daily to
have the comics strips taken out of
the Sports Section in our only daily
newspaper. They do not belong with
the great sports stories.

Now for my fight always. Laredo
athletes are in their conference
indoors championships this weekend.
While the two future Olympic athletes
from Laredo will be in Laredo this
week. It would good if they can get
interviewed by the daily newspaper
for a change

Just to put it in order There are four
conferences championships that
Laredo athletes will be participating
this weekend.  I wonder how it will be
when the full set of Laredo athletes
are participating in Spring
Championships. Then you will have
close to 189 Laredo Athletes in
Conference championships.

Wow so many games in Laredo to
cover this weekend. Basketball
playoffs for the mens high school and
all of them out of town. Clara is sure
going to put some miles on her SUV.

Border Olympics baseball in full
swing so many games so many
"STADIUM" to see the games.  How
does one cover so many games?
Well one at a time.

"See you at the games".

Buenos Dias a todos! Si  todos.

Because Laredo has athletes all
over the country we have to
start there today.

While the television stations in
Laredo carried a bit of the 2010
Border Olympics baseball and
softball high school
tournaments. They had to also
place a few seconds on the out
come of the high school
basketball playoffs games.

Some day they will be allowed to
have more air time to cover all
the great athletes Laredo,
Texas has. Until then we are left
with a void else where.

IN a Galaxy Far Far Way.
Laredo Athletes scored one of
the best efforts in some time in
university track & field
championships.

In two different conference In
Door Championships Laredo
athletes shined with Laredo
colors.

Brittany Talamantez the former
All State Champion in power
lifting from Laredo United came
in 7th in South Dakota at the
Great Western Conference IN
Door championships on the
weight.

Cindy Velasquez the former All
Regional UIL Track & Field
champion from Laredo United
scored a top 15 finish in South
Dakota at the Great Western
Conference In Door in the 100
meter hurdles.

Perhaps the best remarkable
accomplish so far this In Door
season has been the running of
Roger Reuweler the former UIL
Regional Champion on the 4 x
400 relays for Laredo United.

Roger not only has captured the
imagination of media he has
electrified the running boards all
In Door season in 2010 for Sam
Houston State.

Yesterday Roger came in 6th on
the Medley Relays , he came in
8th on the 800 meters. A
remarkable top 10 in
conference as a freshman.

Then there is master long
distance runner Ivan Garcia
from UTSA. The former All State
from Laredo Alexander came in
11th in the Southland
Conference In Door
Championships at 5000 meters.

We leave to last Joe Sciaraffa
from UTPA. Perhaps the
greatest BIG MAN story in In
Doors this season.

While Joe was a former Linemen
in high school football. He is far
most a Javelin thrower. The
Junior at UTPA was asked to
run sprints in doors this season.

At first , this was a like "are you
sure coach" .  Here is a very tall
very big former linemen
throwing a Javelin being ask to
run sprints.

With out any second though Joe
went through the process and
participated in three In door
meets . Including the In Door
championships.

To fate he was placed to run
against the 60 meter runners
that have the best times indoors
this season. Against Pan
American games winning
sprinters and against a runner
who had at the time the best
time in the world at 60 meters.

Obviously Joe a linemen slash
Javelin thrower was not
expected to finish first. But he
finished all his sprints.

The coaches and Joe admit it is
going to help his speed down
the track runway Javelin
throwers use when they throw.

All this had a madness and we
got to see a big man run against
the worlds best sprinters while
hanging in there with them.

A story for the ages a hero to all
big throwers that one of their
own held their reputation well .

The ability to say yes and try it
not once but several times and
in the In Door championships
gives credit to Joe's coaches
throughout his track and field
career.

The new nicks came in flying
high from his adventure. He is
not only just "Javelin Joe" or
"Slick Javelin Joe". Now he is
"BLURR" , 'Speedy Joe" , "Light
Footed Joe" and perhaps the
best new nick  "Laredo's 60
Meter Man".

It took guts to do it and he did it
Laredo Style. "CON GANAS".
Joe all of us big persons are
proud of you. Thanks for
representing us well.

This concludes the In Door
Conference Championships for
Laredo athletes.

But, I am not finished without
asking about our daily
newspaper cosistas.

Wow, a Tamiu basketball story
regulated to the third page. We
are in shock.  Third page is the
best inside any paper its the
page we as humans see first
when we open the pages of the
newspaper.

Lo que pasa cuando you try to
only call in for the results. Our
daily missed the brilliant perfect
game pitched by Tyler Doyer
from San Antonio Reagan
Rattlers in yesterdays 2010
Border Olympics high school
baseball tournament.  Not a
mentioned at all.

The tournament has yield how
great the teams from Laredo will
be this season But have to be
there to see what has taken
shape the first two days.

Besides their photographer their
reporters could have handled
one or two games during the
day for the daily. Yet , they
continue to only call around to
get the scores. Now, do we
understand why we say they at
times cover sports in Laredo as
"Beat reporters" not journalist.

Big rocks I know that I am
throwing to our only daily.
Besides the obvious of not
having enough reporters. There
are many was to get the "PULSE
of Laredo Sports" by the daily.
Only if they would forget the
70's style of reporting and move
on to our new century.

Clara your our reporter of the
day. Great story on the game
you covered out of town. I hope
you come back to. Laredo. We
need your sports reporting.
Someone has to do it at the
daily. Again your "Special to the
Times" thank you.

Again to many "Laredo Morning
Times" articles with no authors
name. Then there is one that
even us all 48 of us here at Lrd
Sports Wire were left. "E Esto".

We joke about the Esperanza
ghost writing for the daily but
the B.O. Golf tournament had a
ghost writer. No mention of an
author or the famous "Laredo
Morning Times" no author name
as the other stories.

With quotes and all from
different people. Oh do tell us
what new technology your using
we would like a crack at that one
as well.  Getting quotes from the
air it appears now thats spooky
getting quotes and printing them
and publishing them with out an
author. Brilliant toy. "MAY" we
use it for the out of town games
we need to cover? WE will trade
your new high tech gadget that
gets quotes from  a long
distance to our sports stories
leads, pictures, story lines and
up to the movement coverage of
sports for the chance to see
and use that gadget.

You know where to call us or
email us.

Until Tomorrow yes we love
Sundays we never know what
"GATEWAY"  has to say or not
say from the 48 of us at Lrd
Sports Wire have " A pleasant
tomorrow".

About Laredo

Buenos Dias a todos! Si toditos

Laredo had perhaps one of the most
busiest sports events in Laredo in
some time.

Most of the events were driven by
Border Olympics in University Golf,
Track & Field for High School and
Universities .

There was a golf tournament held at
Casa Blanca Championship Golf
Course.

Coming in first was Laredo United
Longhorn A Ramos. While his father
was busy in San Antonio with the
Longhorn basketball at UIL Region IV
semi finals on Friday.

Ramos continues to show how much
the talented golfer from Laredo United
has accomplished the last two years.

There were baseball teams in high
school from Laredo in tournaments
and the ladies were holding their own
in softball as well.

Lets not forget TAMIU Basketball had
both the mens and ladies in the
playoffs this weekend. Along with LCC
tennis , softball and baseball.

No si, way to many things to cover by
the few sports reporters left in Laredo.

As always KGNS Pro 8 Sports with the
few moments they are only allowed to
show sports. Did a great job just by
being able to move here and there to
show some of the sporting events
going on in Laredo.

KLDO had a great coverage as well
and they are also limited to a few
moments as well.

Somewhere some way those two
television stations will have to give
them some more moments on the air to
cover the vast sporting evens now in
Laredo.

Border Olympics by far this weekend
had more athletes in their events in
Laredo.  Several things stood out in
the high school track portion.

Do we have great hurdlers or what?
Laredo had in both ladies and mens
110 hurdles two athletes that will end
up in state this year with the times they
posted at the BO Track meet.

Gonzalez for Alexander and Velasquez
sure jump fast and run fast as well.
While Gonzalez reached state a year
ago. Its Velasquez turn this year and
he is turning heads with his remarkable
accomplishments this year.

As we reported first last week as it
happen Rick "The Slick" Velasquez
had broken a long standing record on
the triple jump with a huge leap of 44'
04" . A city record as we stated.

We got to speak with Velasquez father
Rick El Senior AKA "BLUE" as it
happened. He was thrilled THE SLICK
had reached this early in the track
season a remarkable jump.

WE quickly checked the data bank for
city records ( A copy I have on my
office wall with all the city records). I
called "Blue" back and told him it was a
city record. What a way to go into the
Border Olympics with a city record in
his belt.

Rick "The Slick" Velasquez did not
disappoint this weekend. He came in
first on the 110 hurdles and 3rd on the
100 meter dash 4th on the triple jump
and was part of the relay teams as
well.  The Slick is the point mans for
United for this track & field event for
sure.

Well I can not finish without speaking
about sports coverage by our daily
newspaper. Something that everyone
seems to have found they must read
each time . The last time we had over
18,000 views of the comments.

Daily our beloved daily newspaper. (I
am being nice I am saying Beloved)..

Orta ves we got the results of the
Javelina H.S. Invitational results. I know
I been ill and out a few days but I
remember we read the same story the
Monday of last week.

Considering what a great weekend it
was for Laredo sports with all the
million of sporting events here in
Laredo alone. Plus the out of town
tournaments as well we figured we
would get a special section written by
the famous "Special To the Times" .

While we were in respectful mode
yesterday. The daily did provide a
front sports page picture of track &
field (the sport with more Laredo
Athletes than any other sport) and
they went ahead and had a FULL
PAGE devoted to the final results of
the Border Olympics track and field
event. We had a tear in our beer for
sure.

The page is now part of the history of
Laredo and we framed it in glass frame
for all eternity. "SI se puede" was
written in magic marker on top of the
frame as a reminder when our Daily
wants to they can do what ever they
have the urge to cover sports in
Laredo.

Which brings me to a my only passing
shot, my brush back pitch, my hard
cross check (hockey) .

I was researching the other day and I
had going back 12 years of sports
coverage in Laredo at my fingers tips
on my lap top. It took several hours
looking back at the coverage the daily
used to have in Laredo sports.

I noticed they used to really help a lot
in many ways when they would always
place the weekly golf tournaments the
Sun Downers would have. Out of each
tournament the Sun Downers generate
income to offer scholarships to local
students.

Since of lately the Daily has stopped
doing this on their famous Sports
Shorts. Please find it in your ways to
help the Sun Downers and other
organizations when they have their golf
tournaments by having them on the
Sports Briefs. All those groups not just
the Sun Downers generate a lot of
money if the daily would place the
tournaments on the Sports Briefs.

I have started to finish a Face Book
group call "LMT DAILY Bring back 3rd
N Short". So far we have the frame
work for the FB group but the "Natives"
want me to create " Why Does LMT
Not Cover My Mi Hijito & Mi Hijita".
Seems there is more anguish over that
one.

I will stick to the first one for now.

As always now I will have to visit my
sports advisor . I will be going through
withdraw not having a story on Dust
Devil basketball daily even when it was
"NADA QUE VER" happenings with it.

I would figure there would have been
more follow up stories on the hundreds
of dramas that happen this weekend in
sports action in Laredo. We were left
by the daily with only a retold story of
track meet in Kingsville that is a week
old and one story in ladies basketball
(No surprise its not Tamiu) it was the
All District Selection for Ladies
basketball in UIL District 29-5A.

I leave you with a little sports humor.

While I was watching the  Border
Olympics long jump. The coaches from
the local high schools were all there .
Some were helping as volunteers
taking down the jumps. When on the
announcement went up on the next
jumper.

The BO official calls out Josh
Washington. Nombre everyone's head
picked up. Players from Laredo,
Martin, Laredo Alexander , Laredo
United and Eagle Pass started to look
at each other.

The Official looks at me and we both
started to have a chuckle .  We were
all thinking the same thing. No one
could catch up to Washington all
football season. Here he was standing
all alone ready to run down the long
jump track and the coach looks at me
and says "what are you thinking" I said
what the rest of us here are "here is
the chance to catch Washington "
everyone one around us laughed
understanding how great of athlete
Josh Washington is and the terror
everyone faced trying to catch him in
football.

The Del Rio Coach was laughing at
our comments with us and said that
Josh has signed a letter of intent to
play football at Texas A&M Kingsville to
play football. Along with three other
Del Rio Rams players.

Now its someone else that has to catch
Josh. Good Luck no one in district bi
district and area could.

Josh did not disappoint on the long
jump. Washington came in second to a
jumper from Corpus Christi Carrol.

With the jump Josh Washington leads
all jumpers in district 29 5A. A feat they
all have to work on if they want to
catch Josh Washington. The fastest
man in Del Rio, Texas and district 29
5A is now the one to catch on the long
jump. Catch him if you can...
