Last weekend the Lions faced another tough pair of Big Ten foes in Michigan and Michigan State. Unfortunately, a
return to our home courts was not enough to turn around our luck in conference play as the visitors earned wins in
both matches. The Wolverines rallied after dropping the doubles point to win 6-1, while the Spartans squeaked out a
4-3 victory. See below for complete summaries of both matches and a preview of this weekend’s contests at
Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Penn State 1

For the first time in conference play, the Lions played very solid tennis right out of the gates in doubles and were
able to capitalize to take the opening point of the match. Matches were even on all 3 courts for quite a while until a
slew of late service breaks by Penn State broke things open at the 1 and 3 positions. The pairings of
Bourchier/Bader and Welnetz/Hasyn both closed things out with 8-5 wins to seal the point. At #2, Lee/Young fell by
an 8-5 margin after the point had been clinched.

Playing indoors, the guys were able to keep the momentum rolling early in the top 4 singles matches. Both Jason
Lee at #2 and Bryan Welnetz at #4 won their 1st sets while Russell Bader rallied to force an opening set tiebreaker
at #3.

At some point the momentum switched back in favor of Michigan though, as their talented lineup began to put some
sets on the board. Shaun Bernstein was able to secure the tiebreaker and a quick 2nd set over Bader to even the
dual match at 1-1. Moments later, 21st ranked Evan King put a 2nd point on the board for Michigan with his 6-3, 6-3
win over Eddie Bourchier at #1. On the #2 and #4 courts our guys continued to battle but wound up surrendering
their leads and eventually letting Michigan clinch the dual match in their favor. 3-set wins over Lee and Welnetz
provided the 3rd and match clinching 4th point for the Wolverines.

Playing at the 5 and 6 positions, Chris Hasyn and Chris Young both rallied in their 2nd sets to force match
tiebreakers. Both of those went the way of Michigan also though, extending the final margin to 6-1.

Michigan State 4
Penn State 3

Improved doubles play was a major bright spot from Friday’s match, and this continued to the outdoor courts on
Sunday against Michigan State. At #1, Bourchier/Bader took the lead early and never looked back in route to an 8-3
win. Welnetz/Hasyn sealed the point minutes later with an 8-5 victory at #3. In the 2 position Lee/Young dropped a
tiebreaker after the point had been clinched.

The Spartans showed much more life in singles though as they managed to win first sets on 4 of 6 courts. First on
the board was Aaron Pfister for Michigan State who earned a 6-2, 6-4 win over Bryan Welnetz. Chris Hasyn became
the 2nd PSU player to fall minutes later, dropping a 6-3, 6-4 decision. Attention quickly turned to the #1 and #2
courts where both teams tried to finish tough 2nd sets and put additional points on the board. This went in the Lions’
favor at #2 as Eddie Bourchier managed to serve out a 6-2, 6-4 win. Unfortunately, MSU’s Denis Bogatov was
equally clutch at #1 and closed out a 7-5, 6-4 win over Jason Lee.

This left 2 Nittany Lion freshman on court, both of whom needed wins to earn the dual match victory. Russell Bader
held up his end of the bargain with an impressive 3 set win over Ronnie Hulewicz of the Spartans. Chris Young also
found himself in a tight 3rd set, with all of the focus now on his court. A back and forth set with several service breaks
eventually wound up in the hands of Michigan State’s Drew Lied who came through with a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 win to clinch
a Michigan State victory.

@ Wisconsin – 10am Sunday

Two more good opportunities await us this weekend with a trip to the Upper Midwest. Minnesota currently holds the
#24 ranking and a record of 14-3 (5-1 Big Ten). Last weekend the Gophers suffered their first conference loss of the
season 4-3 to Indiana before rebounding for a 4-3 win over Purdue. Wisconsin holds the #73 ranking with a 9-10 (3-
3 Big Ten) record. The Badgers defeated Purdue 4-3 last weekend at home before losing to Indiana by the same
margin.
