The 2010 Great West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, a three-day event hosted by The
University of South Dakota in Yankton, SD, began with the decathalon, heptathlon, men's and women's hammer, and
10K run at Williams Field.
Entering the 2010 Great West Conference Outdoor Championships in the top spot, Oscar Barrera held on to the
gold as he threw a personal best in the hammer throw with a toss of 169-03. Barrera led the field by 14 feet as
NJIT's Josh-Erik Dolisca threw a 155-02 for second place. Teammate Jesus Alvarez placed fifth with a throw of
151-07.
"Oscar performed exceptionally well for us today. He came in as the favorite and was a true champion. He put his
first few throws out there and turned the pressure around on the entire field. Jesus backed him up with his fifth place
finish," said Head Men's and Women's Track and Field Coach Dave Hartman.
True freshman Brittany Talamantez entered Thursday's meet ranked third in the conference and recorded a throw
of 138-08 in the hammer throw for a fourth place finish.
"Brittany performed exceptionally well for us today as well. This is the first year she throws the hammer and she has
adjusted very well. With guidance from Coach Cardenas, who is a first year throws coach, he has prepared the
athletes to compete at a very high level," said Hartman.
Competing in her first ever heptathlon, Abigail Garza stands in sixth place after day one with 2,209 points after
finishing eighth in the 200-meter dash (28.35), seventh in the 100-meter hurdles (18.09), third in the high jump
(5-0.25), and fourth in the shot put (29-10.75). Garza will wrap up the heptathlon tomorrow as she will compete in
the long jump, javelin, and 800-meter run.
"I am very impressed with Abby's performance today. Competing in her first heptathlon, after competing in the high
jump for the past two years, she has transitioned well and is doing a great job. I anticipate for her to move up in the
standings and put up more points for us as well tomorrow," added Hartman.
Placing ninth in the men's division, Frank Garcia registered a 33:06.31 in the 10,000-meter run. In the women's
division, Michelle Zamora placed 11th as she clocked a 40:31.68 shaving off almost 2:30 minutes off her previous
time of 43:04.76.
After Day 1 in the team standings, the men's team stands in third with 14 points, while the women stand in fourth with
five points. South Dakota leads the women's side with 30 points and Houston Baptist leads the men's side with 26
points.
Tomorrow's events include the finale of the heptathlon and decathlon, men's and women's shot put, long jump, high
jump and discus, followed by the men's and women's preliminary running events.
