The Soccer Guru Soccer Guruing At United South High School Soccer Program
The soccer guru's favorite time of the year always happens right after Thanksgiving weekend. Sure the soccer
guru loves all the homemade pies, the little dinner rolls with butter, the delicious Thanksgiving side dishes and of
course the Thanksgiving oven-cooked or deep-fried cajun turkey. But all those delectable and tasty foods only fill up
the soccer guru's stomach and not the soccer guru's soul. The only nourishment the soccer guru's soul needs and
desires to sedate this hunger is the beautiful game played all over the world called soccer.
The first Monday after Thanksgiving weekend is the official start of the high school soccer season here in Texas.
On this day, all the high school start having their tryouts and get ready for their quest to get that district title and to
make it to the soccer playoffs. This day brings out a lot of energy, enthusiasm and passion from not only the
coaching staffs but the soccer players trying to make their respective teams as well. But this day also brings out the
soccer guru out of his so-called hibernation to start formulating his season soccer preview.
While other sports media here in town is busy covering other sports or waits for the actual games to start reporting,
the soccer guru is already doing his research and concentrating only on his beloved soccer. The soccer guru has
already started to go observe and analyze several soccer teams practice sessions. The soccer guru has already also
talked to the coaching staffs, trainers, parents attending their kids at practice and finally the soccer players themselves
during these visits. The soccer guru tries to cover every angle possible in these visits as the soccer guru's attention
to detail gives the guru that extra knowledge not found in other media articles.
The soccer guru's thirst for knowledge has the guru on a journey to see all the high school soccer teams practice
at least three times before the guru writes a review on the teams. The soccer guru does this as the soccer guru
doesn't think that a simple phone call or just watching a scrimmage gives a soccer analyst the insight you need to
make a season preview. The soccer guru's previews include analysis of the coaching staffs, their starters, their bench
play, their technical abilities, their team offensive creativity, their team defensive movements, goalkeeper tendencies
and even analyzes their fan base as well. All these factors play a difference in a soccer season so that is why the
soccer guru goes out of his way to observe, analyze, report and digest the knowledge the soccer guru picks up during
these practice sessions. To see is to know but also to believe.
The soccer guru stopped by United South High School boys and girls practices to observe their sessions. The
soccer guru spoke with Girls Head Coach Letty Garza and newly appointed Asst Coach Julie Cantu. Both were
excited to see the Lady Panthers work hard during the practice session and were eager to better last year's record.
Coach Garza said "We are starting out on a good note as we had a very good turnout for the tryouts. The girls
stayed active during the off-season by playing in different city leagues and practicing on their own. We are moving in
the right direction". Senior forward Jacky "Fishy" Rodriguez said of her teammates "we are working really hard now as
we want to have a very good season. Most of the girls play year round in the city leagues so that is only going to help
in the long run during the season".
The soccer guru then proceeded to go watch the United South boys practice and was equally impressed by the
attention to detail given by the coaching staff. United South Head Coach Willie Santos was running the practice
session and was energetic with his instruction and what he expected from his soccer players. Players were going all
out in the drills as to impress the coach to crack the starting lineup. He said" you play they way you practice so we
want every practice to be intense so it can over onto the field of play. The players know that we can only reach the
next level by being disciplined and working hard all the time". United South goalkeeper/midfielder Jorge Vasquez said
"we are happy that the soccer season already started. We have been working hard these past three days and want
to keep working more so we can get ready for the season opener".
The soccer guru then got on the guru-mobile and drove to Nixon High School. Once there, the soccer guru spoke
with Nixon Head Coach Gris Quijano and newly appointed Asst. Coach Orlando Sanchez. Both coaches were intense
as they ran their practice and were making sure that the entire team was giving their all. Coach Quijano said "we are
looking to surprise a couple of teams this year. We were the youngest team in the district last year and we had a lot
of growing pains but we never quit playing or trying. We had a lot of our girls play and practice in the off-season so
that is only going to help us as team. We have a very unified team so that helps us out as well". Asst Coach Sanchez
said "we are working on conditioning this week as we understand that we still have a young group. We hope to use
our youth and energy to our advantage but understand that we also need to work on the technical side as well. We
are excited to start soccer practices and can't wait for the games to start". Sophomore defender Yahaira Lara said
"we couldn't wait for the start of the soccer season. Most of us worked out during the summer in the city league and
also practiced several times a week to help us stay in shape and get better. We have a lot of energy and know that
we need to continue working hard to get better".
The soccer guru learned two things today as the soccer guru made his rounds seeing the soccer teams: 1) soccer
guruing: which is defined as the quest for soccer knowledge by actual observing and speaking to those participating
as a player, coach or fan so one can expound his knowledge to benefit all the soccer community in the progression of
soccer. 2) that winning isn't done in the game but all winning is done in the preparation by having
discipline, commitment and heart. One can not succeed if one is not willing to put in the effort. The soccer guru has
continued this quest for soccer knowledge the last 12 years and will continue to do it as the soccer guru realizes that
the soccer guru is here for the beautiful game and not the other way around. KE VIVA EL FUTBOL!!!
