Leo Hernandez had been fishing Lake
Casa Blanca at the urging of his son 10
year old Anthony.

Together they enjoyed casting lures 3
times a week catching an occasional
bass or two. On a balmy afternoon 2
weeks ago Leo's luck was about to
change. Just as the sun set he cast a
blue and white spinner bait which he
thought had snagged on a log.

Leo felt a rush when he realized he had a
huge fish at the end of his line and young
Anthony was elated when his father
landed the monster bass. Several hours
later the
big bass would tip the scales at 14 and a
half pounds. If this bass would have been
caught during the spawn and weighed
promptly it would be a lake record. What
makes this catch truly amazing is that it
was caught from the banks of our local
lake by a father who wanted to take his
son fishing and is only a pound shy of the
Falcon lake record.
I have fond memories fishing for white bass
on the Santo Nino Ranch on the Rio Grande
the ranch is located next to the Zachrey
Ranch south of Laredo.

I still remember the sound of the rushing
water on the rapids that produced a feisty
white bass on almost every cast. White bass
on the Rio Grande today are simply a distant
memory since they are now extinct on the rio
due to commercial netting on the Mexican
side and perhaps pollution.

Its important that we protect our river and for
many years ranch owner Joe Hein has made
sure of that. River fish are leaner and fight
harder and young Mark Rodriguez was about
to find out, visiting from Austin he cast a 9
inch plum worm into the rapids early at 7:30
in the morning. The water was only 3 feet
deep but a monster fish grabbed the worm
and quickly headed downriver into deeper
water.

Only a hybrid striper could bend a rod like
that but these big fish are also gone from the
Rio. Mark was surprised when the huge
Largemouth Black Bass broke water and
tested his angling skill and fishing line as
well. Mark was able to land the 16 pound
river hawg and credit is due to his uncle Joe
who has been a good steward of this
legendary stretch of river.

Six other Black Bass were caught that
morning all over 5 pounds and released
back to the brisk waters of the Rio Grande
and another saga was added to its lore.
