Terry Ruskowski sat down with us and talked HOCKEY and Laredo.
IF anyone has placed Laredo in the sports map. It is Terry Ruskowski. As President
, general manager and head coach of the Laredo Bucks Rosco, as the Hockey
world knows him. Ruskowski placed professional sports championships while as
head coach of the Laredo Bucks Hockey team in the eyes of the sports community.
Coach Ruskowski has lived in Laredo for nine years, and is part of the fabric that
makes Laredo. He has made sure that Laredo remains the priority of the Laredo
Bucks on and off the ice.
Sitting down with Coach Ruskowski you see the passion and feel the soul of a
hockey man. That love he has for hockey he has passed it to Laredo and how
Laredo has loved it back in return.
Interviewing Coach is one of the most interesting characters I have interviewed. His passion for the game of
hockey is felt right from his hand shake to the billion dollar smile he has.
I sat down with him this week prior to his leaving for a coaching clinic he has held the last several years in College
Station,TX Here is part of that conversation we had about things Hockey and things Laredo.
Coach what do you look for in a hockey player to come and be part of the Laredo Bucks?
The first thing I look for and ask is are you willing to be community involved while you are part of the
Laredo Bucks. If the answer is no that hockey player no matter how good he is will not be part of our team
in Laredo.
I look for height weight on each player. This is done to help me set up my lines . I do not want to have the
fastest hockey players but if they do not have the size they will be pushed around a lot by bigger lines
from the other hockey teams we face.
I look for the character of the hockey player. How is he off and on the ice. That is important to being a
Laredo Buck.
I look at the career up to that point and see how many points , goals, assists that hockey player has. Along
with how many penalty minutes that hockey player has.
In in all that I look for the consistency on all aspect of their hockey game.
I also look for the mental approach to the game of hockey. I ask them. Where do you want to be in three to
four years in your hockey. If they say I want to be with you then that is not a hockey player for the Laredo
Bucks.
I want someone that will work hard in getting better and wants to be at a higher hockey level within three
years. That will show that hockey player is going to get better the first three years with us if they stay that
long with us. They have to have that drive.
The last thing I look for is if they will be focus in working as a team on and off the ice. So being part of
Laredo while they are here is important to me.
This was one of the easiest interviews I have had the last 7 years doing sports stories and columns. By far a
hockey man to the core, and this man is now part of Laredo and Laredo history for the ages.
This coming week while he is conducting his coaching seminar marks the time that Coach Ruskowski will taste the
2010 season is about to start for the Laredo Bucks.
We will be right along the Bucks this season reporting on their accomplishments in 2010 2011.
